It seems to me that alot of you spend your time worrying about digital effects and how you can put Mickey Mouse in your film (video). Does anyone else but me just think about where I'm going to place the camera and the performances of the actors?

This is something I talked about before. I agree. At this level nearly all effects are dire/silly. It's ok if you're trying to be silly, but if you you're not...well. I'd much rather see a sharp script, nicely acted then someone decapitated, or CGI EYEBROWS or whatever. Not to say some effects arn't nice, sometimes even neccissary, but I feel there is far too much emphasis on them at the present time. As with most things its probably Hollywood's fault biggrin

if you are doing a technical effects shot, that's all you worry about, duh, last thing you want is a piece-of-meat actor ruining your expensive sfx shot ...

did you mean charaterisation and actual direction skills per chance? and ... good acting ability!?

yes there are ppl on this board who don't know a scrim from a dingle to a barn door from a sprocket hole and an audition, but so what? you have to start somewhere, perhaps you should deal out some sage advice rather than making obvious observations in a manner more flat than my singing voice

    Here's some "sage" advice then.

Start with charachters. Write a decent script. Work out your shots. Get you're locations. Cast the right people. Then do you're appaling blue screen or whatever the hell you want.

My point was that there are lots of more important stuff to contend with. People come on here asking how I move this and transport that. Which is cool. But the film should be served by the effects not the other way around.

If you've got the software fair enough. But it shoul'dnt be a priority.

Remember just cos I think effects are not important does'nt mean they aern't just an opinion now, ok?

    Hey there.

Not everyone here that asks a question about CGI or any other effect are trying to be ILM. Half the questions Ive asked regarding cgi have been just for tests or experiments.

Im still learning how to make movies and Im learning about special fx. Not all the people round here are making 25 grand movies. Not all the people round here are entering there movies into festivals. Not all the people around are at film school.

Some people are just playing around with camcorders. Some people are just messing about with computer animation. There doing it because there having fun. They enjoy doing it. And all they do is get looked down on.

When they asked question. "How can I put a spaceship in my video" They get slagged of because "it will look crap" Or "there is no way it will look any good" Some people are just having fun. Trying things out.

Give them a break. If they ask a question and you can help. Then help. If you cant help. DONT FUCKIN MOAN. and slag them off. You dont know there motives. They may have a 25 grand budget they may just have a copy or strata 3d some spare time and an intresting idea. You dont know.

Give people a chance not everyone thinks there Kubric reincarnated.

    Despin out.

why is it that when I post a reply, ppl assume it is in direct response to the post above, and not the topic in general?

    are ppl really that subjective?

surely as filmmakers we should be as objective as possible in order to deliver as close to the truth as possible

    im with Skin.

SFX are too easily abused. much like stunts.

story. talent. shot. edit. audio. sfx a little

most hollywood blockbusters get the sfx in the way of the story and we end up with Armegeddon or Independance day.

And yes. I like to know how there done , caus eit just might be the effect that makes my work .... work in the future.
